Driving to Breckenridge Colorado

Travelers can also reach Breckenridge by flying into Denver International Airport and driving through the scenic Rocky Mountains. The trip from Denver to Breckenridge is roughly 100 miles and takes about 1 hour 45 minutes via Interstate 70 and Highway 8. This route is mostly highway but passes through the infamous Eisenhower tunnel, which traverses through the Continental Divide at an average elevation of 11,112 feet.

The most common driving route from Denver follows:

Interstate 70 west → Frisco, CO → Highway 9 south to Breckenridge

An alternate route and more scenic route is:

Interstate 70 west → Highway 285 W → to Fairplay, CO → Highway 9 north to Breckenridge

This route travels through some beautiful areas of the state, and in the fall, this is one of the most popular leaf peeping routes in Colorado.

Travel time from Denver to Breckenridge is typically around two hours, though winter storms can occasionally extend travel times.

Driving from Western Colorado

Travelers arriving from western Colorado or Utah typically reach Breckenridge via Glenwood Springs, where I-70 leads directly to Vail and Vail Pass. The turn to Breckenridge shortly after that at the town of Frisco onto Route 9 South.

The Free Ride is a collaborative service of the Town of Breckenridge and the Breckenridge Ski Resort providing public transportation service in Breckenridge. The bus system is free to all users and is a convenient way to get around town.

Convenient schedules (up to 2am on weekends), ski and snowboard racks in the winter and bike racks in the summer, this is the most affordable and reliable way to get around town.

Breck Free Ride stops near many popular trailheads making it easy to hit the trails without a car. Depending on the route, most buses run on a 30 min or 15 min schedule. Download “My Free Ride” on your iPhone or Android to get real-time locations of all our buses.

Service animals and well-behaved pet dogs are welcome aboard the Breckenridge Free Ride. Dogs must be licensed, leashed, and sitting next to, or under their handler’s feet.

🚠 BreckConnect Gondola

The free BreckConnect Gondola operates during the summer (typically mid-June through Labor Day), taking passengers from town directly to the base of Peak 8. It provides access to summer activities, hiking trails, dining, and scenic views of the Tenmile Range and Cucumber Gulch Wildlife Preserve. It stops at Shock Hill, Peak 7, and the Peak 8 Base Area.

This gives you access to the Epic Discovery activities (alpine slide, Gold Runner Coaster, mini-golf, scenic chairlift rides).

Operating Hours: Generally runs daily from around 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM or 5:30 PM, depending on the year.

🚐 Summit Stage

The Summit Stage is the Free regional bus system connecting Frisco, Dillon, Keystone and Silverthorne.

Bike Racks (May 1 – Oct 31 only)

All Summit Stage buses are equipped with bike racks from May 1 through Oct. 31, for use between sunrise and sunset. Bike racks can accommodate up to 3 bikes max, on a first-come first served basis. No bikes are allowed inside of the bus. No Bikes are allowed on racks bus before sunrise or after sunset. Official times for sunrise/sunset are obtained through Google search, using Frisco, CO as the location. Learn how to use Summit Stage bike racks.  Due to the lack of snow, bike racks were installed April 3, 2026; this is just for this year.

Class 1 E-bikes (no throttle) weighing <50 lbs are allowed. Class 2 and above E-bikes, or any bikes that weigh >50 lbs are NOT allowed.
