Eldorado Canyon Classic Climb

Colorado Climbing Company logoColorado Climbing Company

Climbing Eldorado CanyonEldorado Canyon has some of the most classic climbing routes in all of Colorado. Where South Boulder Creek has cut through the Fountain Formation it is packed with a variety of cracks, slabs, and roofs that make for exciting climbs in a dramatic landscape. The maroon rock is covered with bright green lichen and the cliffs rise hundreds of feet above the river which is the only real noise in this canyon besides climbers and birds. The climbing here has variety with a few spots for those just learning to climb as well as challenging routes for the more experienced. For anyone who wants to learn trad leading or multi-pitch climbing this is a great place to start. Many of the walls face south and while summer is great there are a high number of climbable days year round to keep this a favorite climbing spot in the Front Range.

About This Climb

Eldorado Canyon is a quiet canyon focused on climbing. With the hues of red rock against bright green lichen there are numerous high quality climbs. A timed entry is required on weekends and holidays.

Choose between these classic climbs

Swanson’s Arete:
With amazing position and moderate climbing this is a pleasant introduction to Eldorado Canyon climbing. A chimney pitch leads you to a broad ledge.  Here you can traverse to the arete itself for another few pitches. Aside from the climbing itself you get great views of climbers on Yellow Spur and Rewritten for future classic climbs.

Yellow Spur:
One of the most classic climbs in the whole state this starts off with a cruxy overhang before a few moderate pitches bring one to the Robinson Traverse which is the last delicate 5.9 pitch before following an arete to a small summit area.

Rewritten:
A tricky start pitch sets the tone before a couple moderate pitches lead to an amazing traverse where you get all the good pictures! Another few great pitches up aretes and cracks yields the summit on this full day climb.

Naked Edge:
As one of the longest and more difficult climbs in Eldorado Canyon this is a classic for North America. Stellar position, intricate and exciting climbing lead to the top of Redgarden Wall after 8 pitches of climbing.
