Getting Around Telluride & Mountain Village
The G
The towns of Telluride and Mountain Village are linked by a spectacular, 13-minute ride on a free gondola. The G is the first and only free public transportation system of its kind in the United States. In the winter, ski and snowboard racks are mounted on the exterior of cabins for those trying to access the slopes. In the summer, bike racks are mounted on the exterior of the cabins. Passengers can load the gondola in either town and ride to the midway point at Station St. Sophia where hiking, biking and ski trails are accessed. This G is not just for transportation. It is also a popular scenic attraction.
Once you discover this unique mountain mode of travel, you’ll find a front row seat to view Mother Nature from 10,500 feet. The ride from Telluride to Station San Sophia has an elevation change of 1,750 feet. And the ride from Station San Sophia to Mountain Village has a 960′ conversion. The gondola runs daily from 6:30 a.m. to midnight during summer and winter. On select event dates, extended hours may be in place. The gondola closes for a short duration in the late spring and fall for maintenance and other operational needs.
The gondola has three primary stations where you can board and unload:
By Foot or By Bike
The majority of lodging properties are within walking distance of Main Street so exploring on foot and bike are easy. The town is only 12 blocks long, so taking a stroll to your restaurant or bar of choice is easy! There is even a historic walking tour of downtown.
Public Transportation | The Galloping Goose
Free transportation is provided by the Town, called The Galloping Goose Transit System. It currently operates 365 days per year and Late night services are available for several summer festivals. There are bike racks on the buses.
